Limca Book of Records 2016

Carpet of 20,000 flowers

50 volunteers toiled for 5 hours yesterday at the venue of today’s Saraswati Puja in DLF City 1, Gurgaon, to create this 13-foot long and 46-foot wide flower carpet made of 20,000 seasonal flowers (babunas/chamomilla, marigolds, gerberas and dahlias) procured from Azadpur Mandi in Delhi.

The flower carpet in this picture covers 600 square feet and has been inspired by the biennial flower carpet of 600,000 flowers outside the Grand Palace at Brussels.

National Record for the FIFTH year in a row:

Most books on crime fiction in shortest time (15 in 57 months). My latest release “Chief Minister’s Mistress” from Fingerprint Publishing finds special mention in the record write-up, as does my very first book.

Do ignore the typo/mistake in line 5 (2013 instead of 2015); I have been assured early rectification.

This is the link to the Limca Book of Records website page for my record:

Chief Minister’s Mistress

Chief Minister’s Mistress

Chief Minister Ravindra Pratap Singh waited for his wife Sunita’s counter. Sunita didn’t bluff. Sunita waited until she had you cold, then she let you have it, right between the eyes.
“Ravindra,” she said grimly, “I have information that a certain young woman has re-appeared in this city – “
“Damn it, Sunita!”
“ – who supposedly had left this city for good – “
“Do you really think – “
“ – and if you see her, if you speak to her, if you so much as utter her name in my presence….”
He slumped down in his chair.
“….I will pack my bags and leave!”
Ravindra Pratap leaned back in his chair, studied the ceiling, then sighed inwardly. His face remained inscrutable. For a moment he thought he heard the silence broken by the “Hang the rapists now!” chant from the protesters outside the CM’s residence, but he guessed it was only his imagination, for his home office was soundproof. But not wifeproof.
“Don’t threaten me, Sunita,” he said smoothly, once again putting to test his favorite strategy of going on the offensive when cornered.
“It’s not a threat, it’s a fact.”
“You’d be insane to leave. You went through a lot to get here.”
“Perhaps that was the insanity, Ravindra. The fact is that if I left, my life would improve in every way that matters, whereas your life, insofar as politics is your life, which it is and always will be, would become rather difficult. Think about that, Ravindra, and perhaps you’ll make your plans for this evening rather carefully.”
She smiled and left the office room. Ravindra Pratap sat frowning at his desk and pondered his next move. She had him by the throat – he knew it and she knew it too. She could destroy him, just by walking out and filing for divorce, and he wouldn’t put it past her, not for a minute. Yet he found himself smiling, savoring the challenge. Somehow, he thought, he could control the situation, could get what he wanted, as he always had. The immediate problem, he decided, was not Sunita, who had said her piece, but Priyanka, his mistress, who was waiting to say hers. You always let people talk. Friend or foe, you gave them their say. Ravindra Pratap grinned at the madness of it all, and reached for the phone.

Chief Ministers Mistress

How happiness and success complement each other perfectly

Joygopal Podder – How happiness and success complement each other perfectly

The libraries of the world are full with books of success stories. But oftentimes we learn: Happiness and success do not come together in the life of a busy man.

Here you see the opposite. It is possible to be happy and successful at the same time. The love and the support of your wife and children combined with a strong will, talent and hard work will lead you where you aimed to go.

Interview in ‘Spectral Hues’

Spectral Hues

vis-à-vis with author Joygopal Podder

Incredibly successful crime thriller author, Joygopal Podder talks to Spectralhues about his writing, his life as an author, his latest novel, ‘The Chief Minister’s Mistress’, his love for paperbacks instead of e-books and being India’s Marathon Author.

The author to write the most books in the shortest period of time: Joygopal Podder. You featured four times in the Limca Book of Records. What brought on this venture into the world of creativity?

Yes, I have featured for four consecutive years in the Limca Book of Records, and I will feature again in the 2016 edition. I hold the National Record for the most number of crime fiction novels published in the fastest time (14 books in 45 months). This record is featured in the 2015 edition of the Limca Book of Records. Earlier, in the 2012 edition, my record was 5 books in 9 months and in the 2013 edition, my record was 10 crime fiction novels in 21 months. I appeared in the 2014 edition also with 13 crime fiction books in 29 months. So, even my continuous appearance in the Limca Book of Records is becoming something of a record! I am really blessed!

How I met Priti

Photo of The Podder Family

With less than six weeks to go for elder daughter’s wedding, my mind goes back almost 26 years to when I first met her mother.

It was at a late evening terrace dance party on top of a house in south Delhi. Friends and sisters Pushpa and Prabha Nair lived there on the top floor and had organised the party for their close friends (many of us did not know many of the others before this party).

I had strutted in wearing a leather jacket and, as my future wife told me many years later, had immediately put off Priti (who was standing in a corner of the terrace sipping a soft drink) with my ‘I am a stud’ swagger. She had cast one disgusted look at me and averted her eyes. I, on the other hand, could not stop staring at this cute looking elfin-type girl in the oversized yellow pullover the moment I laid my eyes on her. (We have been debating ever since whether it was Priti or her yellow pullover which first attracted me, since it was I who mostly wore the sweater during the first few years after our marriage.)

With five years of heavy duty partying behind me (ever since I got my first job and company car) I was not short on confidence. I walked up to Priti and with my (well practiced) charmer’s smile asked her for a dance. I extended a hand for hers before she could think of refusing. We spent the whole evening dancing and talking, and I taught her my favorite ‘box dance’, which has been a family favorite ever since. We were married just four months later.

Our daughters Panvi and Piya cannot believe that their now very ‘propah’ and rapidly graying parents were such swingers even into their late twenties, but that’s the way it was….

Chief Ministers Mistress

Chief Ministers Mistress

AN EXTRACT FROM MY NEW BOOK Chief Ministers Mistress: When Detective Inspector Badrish Sharma uncovered the body, the man cried out and fell to his knees. He reached out and touched the woman’s face, then gasped at the chill of her skin, at the reality of death. He knelt beside her, pale, tears welling in his eyes, whispering something that might have been her name.

Badrish Sharma watched it all professionally. He had watched such scenes a thousand times. He had seen hysteria, laughter, fainting, shock, anger, fear, heart attacks, and, occasionally, the little signs – too much emotion or too little, nervousness, ill-concealed delight – by which killers sometimes gave themselves away. This man Rajat Verma’s grief seemed real enough. Which meant absolutely nothing.
